I got one of these last year for my daughter to ride to and from school and for enjoyment and she really likes it. She had just turned 11 and wasn't interested in single speeds anymore, nor did she like the traditional girl's step-through frame. This bike has slightly smaller wheels than adult road/mountain bikes and therefore can be made with a smaller frame. My daughter's 12 now and still loves this bike. It's just a little bit too big still for my 10-year-old son but he'll grow into it by next summer.

The Gripshifts are pretty easy for kids to get used to with a little general instruction on shifting from an experienced rider. This bike has a steel frame and entry-level wheels and components so it's on the heavy side but also solidly built. Haven't had a problem with the brakes, shifters or derailleurs yet. Expecting my kids to be rough on it and/or grow out of it within a year or two I thought this bike was a great value.
